Nearly a month into the new year, some of the key fashion trends for the new 2024 are already crystalizing. Many of the trends we saw developing in the last year continue evolving into the new one along with a few new and exciting ones, promising some fun and bold fashion moments. Dropped waists, XXL hip padding, and oversized sleeves already seem like the most popular silhouettes this year, while the even more unusual jelly fashion and jazz revival trends are in for the brave fashionistas and special occasions. For a general summary of the most prominent fashion trends this year, please continue reading below.
Polished Preppy
Following the bold voluminous suiting in statement colors and the “power dressing” that marked the post-covid period people may now gravitate to a bit more casual workwear like trousers, T-shirts, and dresses, but will still want to keep a polished look with a polo shirt or a nice blazer.
Quiet Luxury
A coinciding trend, that we already noticed developing in the past year, is the so called “quiet luxury”, also referred as “old money style”. It is all about wearing pieces that look and feel very expensive, but aren’t necessarily so. The focus is on simple silhouettes, perfect tailoring and high quality materials rather than on expensive brands.
Very Feminine
Another popular trend in 2024 are the hyper feminine styles or ultra girly aesthetics with Barbie, ballet, and cottage vibes. Pink and lacy details are very typical, of course, as are bows, pastels, and floral prints.
Volumes and shapes
The new year also encourages experimenting with volumes, length and shapes. The skinny jeans are confidently replaced by exaggerated lengths and volumes in long dresses, oversized sleeves, jackets, and even drop-waist dresses, all gradually becoming mainstream again.
Pops of color
Neutral looks in crisp basics like black, gray, camel and white will tend to be accented by pops of color this year. This means, you could easily refresh your wardrobe just by adding a touch of color in pistachio green, millennial pink, canary yellow, lavender purple or the soberer deep navy, all quoted as the most popular colors this year.
Classic, simple pieces
According to experts and surveys there has been a backlash against fast fashion and people increasingly prefer more durable, classic pieces in the neutral color palette, that are easier to mix and match and can be worn longer. Some currently trending garments are Oxford shirts, simple T–shirts, cardigans, bomber jackets, and straight-leg jeans, as well as wardrobe staples, like simple dresses for women and well-fitted khakis for men.
Sustainability
As a natural continuation or even a likely precondition of the previous trend comes the rising interest in sustainability and reuse of materials and clothing. Concerned about the downsides of fast fashion and mass consumption many people turn to pre-loved and thrifted clothes, as well as brands applying sustainable practices and materials. There is also a noticeable return to plant and animal fibers like wool, linen, hemp, and other, that had been somewhat neglected during the rise of polyester.
